LAUSD Race Runoff Election

Los Angeles, CA – With the recent wins by the United Teachers of Los Angeles came about with some commitments by the LAUSD to address prevailing issues at the 1,000 schools which consist of over 600,000 children. At the forefront of these issues are charter schools, class sizes, among other pertinent issues.

The next LAUSD Board Member will be facing these challenges head on and the race has just moved forward to a runoff election in the 5th District. The race has narrowed down to two candidates: former LAUSD Board Member and UTLA favorite Jackie Goldberg and Heather Repenning who was the former Field and District Director for Councilmember Eric Garcetti.

With so much at stake, this critical vote in the LAUSD could determine the educational opportunities afforded to the predominantly Latino children who reside in LAUSD’s 5th District. The runoff election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 14, 2019.

DREAM Act (S. 874)

The DREAM Act of 2019 was introduced on March 26, 2019 by Senator Lindsey Grahahm (R-SC) and is currently co-sponsored by Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL). The bill’s title is as follows:

A bill to authorize the cancellation of removal and adjustment of status of certain individuals who are long-term United States residents and who entered the United States as children, and for other purposes.

Who’s Standing with Dreamers, TPS and DED in California?

Washington D.C. – With the introduction of H.R. 6, the “Dream and Promise Act of 2019” has come a new hope to address the Trump Administration’s incessant attacks on immigrant communities.

The bill itself represents a new vision for immigrants residing in the United States based on fair and humane policies that value people and their contributions. For those who qualify, this bill offers a path to citizenship which is more inclusive than previous efforts in the past.

The Senate, in turn, has responded by introducing both the DREAM Act and SECURE Act. These pieces of legislation are stand-alone but include a similar vision as the combined H.R. 6 Bill in the House.

One thing is for certain, as the uncertainty of young immigrants, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Temporary Protective Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforcement Departure (DED) recipients, these bills offer a light at the end of the tunnel.  Below is a list of co-sponsors for each of these three pieces of legislation. The CHIRLA Action Fund will monitor these pieces of legislation as they serve for the foundation for a bold vision for America. We will be tracking the support garnered for these bills and will offer an analysis of what they include as a pro-active solution to section of our immigrant community who continue to be stuck in limbo.
