Washington D.C. – With a last ditch effort to pass the DREAM Act this year with hundreds of immigrant youth protesting in the halls of Congress, both the House of Representatives and the Senate have voted to kick the issue down the line to 2018.
With an initial vote of 231-188 in the House of Representatives and a vote of 66-32 Senate, the continuing resolution will fund the Federal government up until January 19, 2018. There was a dramatic about face by both Senator Schumer and Senator Feinstein who ended up voting “no” on the resolution after actions were held in both their district and Washington D.C. offices. Senator Kamala Harris voted “NO” as well. The House of Representatives will vote once again on the Continuing Resolution after passing in the Senate.
The fight for the DREAM Act will continue into next year and we can expect that immigrant youth and their allies will intensify their efforts as the January 19th deadline draws closer in the new year.
